OfficerSurvival.com provides products and resources for law enforcement personnel related to officer safety, defensive tactics, and threat mitigation. Law enforcement or corrections professions are inherently dangerous and deal directly with the worst elements of society. Police Officers and corrections personnel nationwide are assaulted and injured by suspects and inmates every day, and unfortunately, sometimes those personnel also make the ultimate sacrifice during the course of their duties.
Through the propagation of effective and efficient training, hopefully those numbers (both felonious fatalities and injuries) can be reduced. Many agencies and organizations have extremely "good" defensive tactics and arrest/control programs in place but sadly, there are many that don't. Another problem that exists throughout the country is the lack of integration of defensive tactics with firearms programs. This gap creates a vacuum that needs to be addressed as well.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of so called "trainers" out there selling training programs and material that is ineffective and inadequate, not only in the defensive tactics and arrest/control areas, but also in firearms instruction.
Complicated "techniques" and procedures trained and explained in sterile training environments lack the authenticity and simplicity required to be effective in the real world environment. This approach to training illustrates the wisdom in the attitude that sometimes "less is more". Most agencies don't have the time to expend on frequent training due to man power issues, budget, and so on. Training has to be simple, yet effective, and must also be easy to retain. It is also imperative that the material be versatile enough to suit personnel of different genders, size, age, background, and personality.
While we can't necessarily predict the future, we can study trends and pay attention to past incidents. While statistics can be skewed to reflect bias, entities such as the Department of Justice release LEOKA statistics that can prove to be a valuable training aid. There are those out there who will use "scare" tactics to sell products by brandishing liability or other suggestions to push an agency to purchase items or adopt a certain curriculum. For example, according to the LEOKA statistics, MOST Police Officers are NOT killed with their own handguns as some training entities would like you to believe. Collectively, it's more like 10% or less of felonious deaths occur with the officer's own handgun. This is not to suggest weapon retention is not an important training topic, but it's an example of a training entity misquoting statistics for financial gain. Study the statistics but be wary of those who try to interpret them for you.
